MODESTY 10-hour PROJECT for girls who love fashion

My daughter (at age 12) with her display table for YWIE

Here are some very cute digital collages that someone named "munchygirl" made on Polyvore (click on the photos if you want to go to the posts on Pinterest). "Munchygirl" has made one of these representing each of the YW Values, but I am only showing the two with the more modest outfits (They are all beautiful, but many of them featured sleeveless, short, or low-cut dresses or a bikini, which I feel like sort of sends a mixed signal). I like the general concept, though.

I think a fun Personal Progress 10-hour value project (especially for a young woman who is into art, design, or fashion) would be to review the clothing standards set by the First Presidency in For the Strength of Youth:
Immodest clothing is any clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner. Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back...Young men and young women should be neat and clean and avoid being extreme or inappropriately casual in clothing, hairstyle, and behavior.
and then make a unique collage (like those shown above) for each of the 8 Young Women values. One website that allows users to create online collages like this is Polyvore (which is where the collages shown above were created).  I tried to make my own collage on there, and it did not turn out as cute as the ones shown above, thats for sure! But I'm sure most of the YW are more tech savvy than me! Please be aware that Polyvore is a commercial site not affiliated with the Church in anyway, so things on there may not necessarily be appropriate, so some parents might want to provide some assistance if this resource is used. I found it VERY difficult to find modest clothing on this site, even though they must have a million dresses on there. Almost all of them are sleeveless or strapless and very short. I also could not figure out how to add the YW Value posters like munchygirl did, but again, I'm sure you have YW who would be better at this than me!

Here was my attempt at a "Divine Nature" collage:

An alternative to creating digital collages like this would be to create paper collages using pictures from magazines/catalogs and pictures of clothing that the YW owns.

Creating 8 collages would take some time (whether digital or paper and glue), but wouldn't meet the entire requirement for a 10-hour project. Here are some additional ideas that would go along with creating the 8 collages to make a complete 10-hour project:

  • Make a modest clothes “board” on Pinterest and add clothes you like to it (they could spend HOURS doing this!)
  • After reviewing the standards for dress in For the Strength of Youth, think about why this is so important to church leaders and to Heavenly Father.
  • Look through your own clothes and see if there is anything that you now want to stop wearing (or wear in a more modest way – like wearing a tank top with a sweater over it).
This project could work as a 10-hour Value Project for "Integrity" or "Virtue" (or possibly others)
