JOHNNY LINGO / 8 COW WOMAN JOINT ACTIVITY

The Mia Maids are in charge of planning a joint (all-girls) activity this month and we have planned a special "Johnny Lingo" activity. None of the Mia Maids had actually seen the movie "Johnny Lingo," which is a short movie made in 1969 that is now kind of a cult classic among LDS people (no pun intended! :) ). Your ward library may have a copy of the movie - it is one of the short movies on a VHS tape produced by the church titled "The Worth of Souls" along with several other short movies like "Uncle Ben" and "The Mailbox" (on the same tape). Our library didn't have a copy, so I found it on youtube here

The movie is very corny (and the hairstyles are very 70's), but like I said, this movie is a classic. The general idea is that Johnny Lingo (a wealthy, good-looking, and respected man in a Polynesian village) is ready to marry and he sets his sights on a homely, unpopular girl named Mahana, who is despised and put-down by her father. The custom is for the would-be husband to "pay" a girl's father a certain number of cows in order to marry her. Girls who are attractive and skilled are "worth" more cows than less-attractive girls. Many women on the island have been deemed worth 2, 3, or 5 cows. The only reason the villagers can think of that Johnny might choose to marry Mahana is because he is a shrewd trader and wants a good "bargain". They all wonder how few cows he can get her for - maybe a sick 3-legged cow, or just a hoof? They are shocked when Johnny Lingo refuses to pay less than 8 cows for Mahana. It has a very cute message about how to treat people and self-worth.

JOHNNY LINGO ACTIVITY

ACTIVITY PLAN: WATCH THE SHORT MOVIE ‘JOHNNY LINGO’ (ABOUT 20 MINUTES)*, FOLLOWED BY AN ACTIVITY WHERE THE YOUNG WOMEN WILL ROTATE THROUGH STATIONS AND DO 8 MINI-PROJECTS TO EARN ‘COWS’ AND BECOME AN ‘8 COW WOMAN’. POLYNESIAN THEME – THIS ACTIVITY IS HELD IN THE WINTER, BUT JUST FOR GIRLS MAY COME DRESSED IN (MODEST) SUMMER CLOTHES, HAWAIIAN SHIRTS, SUNGLASSES, ETC (IF THEY WANT TO). THEY WILL BE GIVEN A LEI NECKLACE AS A PRIZE AT THE END.

AFTER THE MOVIE, WE TALKED ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE PARTS AND DISCUSSED HOW MAHANA CHANGED WHEN HER SELF-IMAGE IMPROVED. THEN I TOLD THE GIRLS THAT I THINK THEY ARE ALL 8 COW WOMEN, BUT THEY WERE GOING TO MAKE IT OFFICIAL BY PASSING OFF CHALLENGES AT 8 STATIONS.

I GAVE EACH GIRL A SHEET OF PAPER WITH 8 SQUARES AND THE WORDS "ARE YOU AN 8 COW WOMAN?" AND INSTRUCTED THEM TO GO FROM STATION TO STATION, COMPLETING THE TASKS AT EACH ONE (AND GETTING EACH SQUARE SIGNED OFF BY THE MENTOR).

EACH OF THE STATIONS HAD A "COW" THEME:

·    EARN A "HOLY COW" BY MEMORIZING A SHORT SCRIPTURE (I picked a one sentence scripture verse and printed it out, then once they had learned the verse, they would recite it to the mentor for that station)

·    EARN A "MOO-CHAS GRACIAS" COW BY WRITING A THANK-YOU NOTE TO SOMEONE (I supplied a stack of thank you notes, and they were asked to write a thank you note to someone. When the note was completed, the mentor then signed off their sheet)

·    EARN A "COW BELLE" BY TAKING A QUIZ ABOUT MANNERS/ETIQUETTE (I made up a short quiz based on some etiquette for teens quizzes I saw online. I tried to make it about things that were relevant and that weren't TOO hard)

·    EARN A "COW-TIPPING" BY RANKING COSTS OF LOW-BUDGET & HIGH-COST ENTERTAINMENT (my list included "watching a movie at home" "going to the movies and getting popcorn" "attending a free concert" "baking cookies with a friend" "eating dinner at a fancy restaurant" and "going to the park"- I printed these out on word strips. Before the mentor signed off the task, they needed to put the wordstrips into two piles - low-budget and high-cost)

·    EARN A "SIMON COW-ELL" BY LEARNING ABOUT & LISTING THEIR TALENTS (Each girl was given a piece of paper and asked to list all of their talents (as many as they could think of. The mentor had a list of talents to help if the girls got stuck or couldn't' think of anything)

·    EARN A "COW PIE" BY SOLVING A PUZZLE WITH A SERVICE THEME. (I printed out a quote with some blanks in it and the girls were supposed to fill in the blanks with some pre-printed words that I had prepared.  Here is the quote I used: "According to a recent survey reported on by The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) volunteer more of their time than any other group in America. According to the research,  about 40% of all Americans report that they participate in volunteer service. The average Mormon spends 430 hours a year in church and community service, which is 8.2 hours a week or about 25 hours monthly, 6 to 8 times the amount the average American who volunteers contributes" (The numbers in red are those that I left blank in the quote and printed separately. That way, they had to take the 3 numbers they were given and put them in the appropriate spot. This would probably be a guess, so if they got it wrong, the mentor would just correct them)

·    EARN A "GRAZING" COW BY SOLVING A PUZZLE ABOUT MAKING HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES (I looked up nutrition recommendations (for teens) online and made a short -like 5 questions- true or false quiz. So it was things like "It is suggested that teens eat 5 servings of fruits & vegetables every day" and they would mark true or false). It was ok if they got some of them wrong- if so, the mentor would just point out the right answer.

·    EARN "COW-LASTETICS" BY LEARNING ABOUT EXERCISE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TEENS (I looked up exercise recommendations (for teens) online and made a short -like 5 questions- true or false quiz. So it was things like "It is suggested that teens get 3 hours of exercise per day" and they would mark true or false). It was ok if they got some of them wrong- if so, the mentor would just point out the right answer.

I MADE INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH STATION AND WHATEVER I NEEDED TO PRINT OUT (LIKE THE
SCRIPTURE THEY WERE TO MEMORIZE, OR A LITTLE QUIZ I MADE UP ABOUT MANNERS) ON A
WORD DOCUMENT. YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE THE INFORMATION LEARNED AT EACH STATION TO FIT
YOUR GIRLS' NEEDS.

OTHER PURPOSES:

·INVOLVE THE MIA MAID PRESIDENCY IN A LEADERSHIP CAPACITY AS 'MENTORS' FOR 4 OF THE 8 MINI-PROJECTS (WE HAD THIS PLANNED AHEAD, SO THEY PICKED WHICH STATIONS THEY WANTED TO DO)

·INCLUDE SOME OF THE WARD’S WOMEN AS MENTORS FOR THE OTHER 4 MINI-PROJECTS

WHEN EACH OF HER SQUARES WERE SIGNED OFF,  I GAVE  EACH YOUNG WOMAN HER OWN OFFICIAL "8 COW WOMAN" LEI NECKLACE...

We made 8-cow lei necklaces for each girl and the adult mentors. I bought some inexpensive leis (about 40 cents each) and printed out little cow clipart from the internet. Then I punched a hole in each cow and tied 8 of them to each lei with raffia. Here I am, modeling one of them!

  1. Hello Lynell! My Beehives want to do this activity. We are interested in finding out if you have any pdf downloads of the cows, things you used for the stations (quizzes, low budget/high entertainment station, solving a puzzle with a service theme and making healthy food choices, etc).

Thanks so much! I was just called as the Beehive leader and this is our first YW combined activity!

Thanks so much for your help!

    Happiness,
    Davina

    1. Thank you!

Usually I just go online and search for free clipart when I need pictures for something like this, and thats what I did this time, too - so I don't have a pdf or anything, but don't worry - free cow clipart is readily available online!

I didn't keep any of my original papers from the the stations, but I have just updated the post with a little more detail, so hopefully that will help. I found most of my information online and spent only about 5 minutes on creating the worksheet for each station, so my advice would be to keep it simple because the girls want to move on quickly!

  5. Our Beehives are going to act this out for our New Beginnings, have you ever seen anywhere where they have an abbreviated script??? I guess we will do it sort of impromptu! We are talking about how if we do the Personal Progress, attend our Sunday classes and Mutual that we too can realize our inner and outer beauty as a daughter of God!
